William Nibbs 1852-1918

William Nibbs was the fifth child, (second son) of William David Nibbs and Mary Ann Timoney (Tumney).

His father was a convict, transported to Australia in 1831 for participating in the machine breaking ‘Swing Riots’ in Buckinghamshire, England. His mother was born in Co. Tyrone, Ireland. She was also a convict, transported from Dublin in 1843 on the ship ‘East London’. She served 7 years for stealing a coat.

Irene Bisson had been married to Gowan Richard Banks in 1911 at Bairnsdale. They separated soon after the marriage but probably did not divorce. She had a child Leslie Bisson who took the surname Nibbs whilst still an infant.
She was the daughter of Capt. Charles Bisson 1850-1906 and Sophia Sarah Perry 1858-1919.

Spouse 1: At age 15 Sarah had an in illegitimate son to Colonel Benjamin Henry Rooke.

Colonel Benjamin Henry Rooke was born in the United Kingdom in 1809 and died February 10, 1884 at Ulverstone. He is buried East Devonport Anglican (St Paul). After retirement from the British Army, Rooke came to Tasmania with his Spanish wife and son Henry and stayed with his brother Mr. Adolphus Frederick Rooke of Westbury.
He became Police Clerk and Deputy Registrar at the Court of Requests at Torquay [Port Sorrell District] in 1860. Rooke Street, West Devonport is named after him. His first wife died in 1865 and his son Henry went on to become a member of the Legislative Council.

Col. Rooke married Caroline Agnes Stevens in 1868 and they had 5 children, one of whom, (Frederick Kinder Rooke), married Sarah’s daughter Catherine Dufton Foley.

Torquay Police Court Wed March 23 before Henry Douglas, Esq., S.M.

Robert James Brown aged 16 and William Nibbs, alias Rooke, aged 15 were charged

with unlawfully and maliciously setting fire to a stack of wheat, a stack of oats, and a stack of hay, the property of S H Thomas of Northdown.

Apparently they were smoking a bit of dock for a pipe and the thistle blew onto the stack which may have caused the fire. They were committed to trial and released on bail. (Full story online - Trove digital newspapers).
