John Patrick Nibbs 1849-1894

John was the eldest son of William Nibbs and Mary Ann Timoney. He was born at Westbury in Tasmania. William and Mary had been married by Rev. Bishton in 1845. William had been granted his ticket of Free Pardon (No 159), on 15 April 1836 and was an overseer on Bishton’s property at Pardoe but Mary did not receive her pardon until 29 January 1850 so was obliged to stay at Westbury. Other children were born to the couple whilst she was still in service. William purchased an acre of land in Westbury in 1842, but must have travelled between both sites whilst Pardoe was being established. Rev Bishton also established a housing area in Westbury for freed convicts. There is a William and Mary Street here. I wonder if these were named after our ancestors. There is also a Mary Ann Street which may have been associated with William’s block.

The Late Mr. Nibbs
Our Duck River correspondent writes: The funeral of the late John Nibbs took place on Tuesday last. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather about 100 people followed the mortal remains to its last resting place. The burial service was conducted by Mr. J Malle, of Duck River, who in a few well-chosen and appropriate words made an earnest appeal to those present to prepare for that change which must sooner or later take place to all. Seldom has a more impressive scene been witnessed than that around the open grave of John Nibbs, so overwhelmed with genuine grief were the bereaved ones as to the cause feelings akin to those suggested by those beautiful lines “Better to weep with those who weep, and share the afflicted’s smart, than mix with fools in giddy joy, that cheat and wound the heart.”

Caroline was the daughter of William Howard and Sarah Ann Stigwood. She was born in England on 2 June 1852 at Hockham, Norfolk and immigrated to Tasmania with her family when she was 3 years old. The family arrived on the ship ‘Whirlwind’ on 31 March 1855. [ LINC name index 438913]. She died at the residence of her son in law J. Gale on 21 October 1928 at Marrawah, Tasmania.

Mrs Nibbs an esteemed resident of the district who had reached the age of 77 years, passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs J Gale, Marrawah, and was buried at the Scotchtown Cemetery, Smithton, on Tuesday afternoon by the members of the Christian Brethren. Her husband died 30 years ago.

Mrs Caroline Nibbs
There passed away at Marrawah on Sunday October 21 after a week’s illness with pleurisy, a well-known old resident of Circular Head in Mrs Caroline Nibbs, Sr. She was 77 years of age and was born in England, coming out with her parents to Tasmania when she was only three years old. For the past forty years, she had resided in this municipality, the greater part of the time at Smithton where she was much liked for her kindly, quiet disposition. She lived the kind of life that for long remains a memory. During recent years, she suffered from rheumatic complaints, but apart from this she did not know what it was to suffer an illness throughout her long life. Her descendants include over 30 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Of the surviving children, Will, the eldest son is in Adelaide, Jack in Melbourne and Mrs A Powe at Riana. The others, Tom and Frank and Mesdames W. Boote, J. Gale, G. Hall and W. Innes reside in Circular Head.
The body was bought to Smithton for interment, and a large cortege left the residence of Mrs G Hall on Tuesday afternoon for the Scotchtown Cemetery, where the last rites were performed by Messrs J Arnold of Marrawah and Rob Kay, Jr of West Forest, Christian Brethren. The pall bearers were Messrs J Arnold, R Kay Jr. D Lovegrove and Jas Bentley, Snr

Caroline arrived in the colony as a three-year-old. Like her siblings, she was born in Hockham and baptised in the same parish church. (In 1868 Caroline’s brother Charles had married Elizabeth, younger sister of John Nibbs). The couple were married by the Wesleyan minister, at his residence in Latrobe, with a friend John Hickey as witness, together with Caroline’s married sister Emily Garland.
John and Caroline had a large family – 12 children and two of their eight daughters died as infants. Their eldest child John William was born in 1873 at Skelbrook. Mary Ann was born at the Don in 1874 and then there was a seven-year period when they went to live at Castra Road {Sprent} where John worked at the local sawmill as a sawyer.
By 1886? They had moved to Duck River (Smithton) where John continued as a Mill Sawyer until his death from “exhaustion, the result of Malignant disease” [probably a cancer] in 1894, aged 45 years. His youngest child was less than two years old. Caroline was left with the care of four children under 10 years of age and two daughters not yet of marriageable age. Three unmarried sons were capable of caring for their parent and younger siblings if there were jobs available in the district. The Bank of Van Diemen’s Land had failed in August 1891 causing widespread hardship throughout the colony and things were no better in the other Australian colonies.

Ellen Ollington aka Lovegrove aka Nibbs – Her story:

In: Daily Telegraph (Launceston, Tas.) Saturday 13 November 1926, p.13 there is a story titled "Much Married Couple - a Tangled story" It is about a man called Charles Arthur Hilsley also known as Arthur Lovegrove and a case of bigamy heard in the Burnie Court House that day. His first marriage was to Eileen Ollington on 29 November 1893 at St. Paul's Church, Stanley [#799] and lived with her at Smithton. She left him however, and went to live with a man named Walter Scott at Balfour. Lovegrove went on to say he had never seen her since she left him but had heard she had been sent to the Mental Disease Hospital, New Norfolk. He subsequently married twice- once to May Davis and to Ivy Victoria Steer without obtaining a divorce.

Records from the New Norfolk Hospital for the Insane, show that Eileen or Ellen was indeed admitted to that hospital, twice. Once in 1907 and again in 1919. These records are available online at the Tasmanian Archives (Name index – Medical Record).

7 October 1907 - A Justice's order dated for her to be admitted, states she was a person of unsound mind following child birth. It also noted "The patient has been living as a wife with John Nibbs for the past fourteen years. The whereabouts of her husband "Lovegrove" is unknown."[That would put the date as being with John Nibbs at around 1893. The year she was married to Lovegrove.] Their place of residence was Macquarie Heads.
Admission date to the hospital is 14 October 1907 under the name Ellen Nibs aka Lovegrove. The admission record states melancholia 3 weeks after birth of a child. (Her daughter Winifred Alice Nibbs was born in August 1907) Neglect and indifference to baby. Fits in which she was unconscious. Struggled in convulsions and had to be tied to bed to avoid injuring herself. Apathy and listlessness. Continual mental depression. Mrs Hake of the lighthouse stated Nibbs was violent at Macquarie Heads and threatened to commit suicide by drowning or to take poison through eating matches. Ellen was discharged from hospital on 25 November 1907.

A son, James Arthur William Lovegrove was born 7 October 1894 at Stanley, Tas. Reg. No. 2380. His Father is named as Arthur Lovegrove.

Another son, Wilfred James Lovegrove was born in November 1896 at Stanley, Tas. His birth registration records the Father as Lovegrove, Christian name not recorded. Reg No. 2310
If the 1907 hospital record is correct, Ellen would have been living with John Nibbs now and he is possibly his father. But why wasn't his name on Wilfred's birth registration? All other records I found list him as Wilfred John Nibbs, including his enlistment papers for the AIF in September 1914 which names John Nibbs as his father.

Wilfred was wounded at Gallipoli on the 5th May, 1915 with a gunshot wound to the head and was evacuated to Egypt where he died on the 8th May 1915. He was 18 years old and is buried at the Alexandria 'Chatby' Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

A second Justice Order for admission to New Norfolk hospital, dated 16 July 1919, states that Ellen Nibbs of 74 Bathurst Street, Launceston, was a person of unsound mind due to the death of her son at war. In a medical certificate statement, John Nibbs said that on a trip to Burnie 3 weeks ago, they passed some soldiers who were celebrating their return. She became over-excited. The loss of a son at the front had continually been preying on her mind. Since then the patient has been suffering with excitement and hallucinations and has been sleepless at times.
A hospital report commented that the patient had been kept in bed as her manner is extravagant and she is extremely emotional - howling one minute and laughing the next. At times, she disturbs the ward and particularly at night the ward patients were kept awake by her cries.
Ellen remained a patient at the New Norfolk hospital until being discharged on 22 December 1920.

In 1914, he was a labourer, living at Strahan.
He enlisted in the AIF on 19 Sept 1914, (Service No. 1221) at Pontville, Tas., age 18 and embarked from Melbourne 22 Dec 1914 on board “HMAT Ceramic” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. He was wounded at Gallipoli on 5 May 1915 with a gunshot wound to the head. He was evacuated to Egypt on the hospital ship “Devanha” and admitted to the Deaconness Hospital Alexandria where he died 8th May, 1915. He was buried in the Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

The sudden death of Mr. William Boot occurred at his residence on Sunday night, through heart failure. He was born at Stanley in 1868 and spent part of his early life on the West Coast, where he was connected with the erection of the Mt. Lyell smelters. He had however spent the best part of his life in Smithton, where he was well known as a keen fisherman and sportsman. Until recently he owned and sailed the Estelle, a fast, little vessel well known to the islands. His wife survives him. Daughters are Mesdames Grundy and James; and sons Messrs. F., V., and F. and J. Boote. The funeral is to leave his late residence at 2.30 this afternoon.

The funeral of the late Mr William Boote took place at the Scotchtown Cemetery on Tuesday after noon. There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral which was conducted by the Rev. Nibbs. The carriers were Messrs. F Heald, A Billing, D Billing and W Weedon and the chief mourners were Messrs T V and J Boote (sons of the deceased) and T Nibbs and G Hall (brothers in law)

On Sunday soon after tea time an old and well-known resident in Mr. William Boote passed away suddenly. He was 62 years of age. As he had been under medical treatment for a heart complaint an inquest was not deemed necessary. Mr. Boote was a carpenter by trade, he had a great love for the sea, on which he spent a good deal of his time on trips to the Straits islands in his own little craft. He also had a liking for the violin, and in the earlier days his services were much in request for dances in all parts of the district. In those days, he was also an acceptable concert performer, both vocally and instrumentally. He leaves a wife and several children, Messrs. Vernon Boote of Queenstown, Frank of King Island, Fred and Jack of Smithton and Mesdames Grundy and James of Smithton. The funeral took place at Scotchtown cemetery on Tuesday afternoon when there was a large attendance. Pastor Nibbs conducted the burial service.

FELL FROM TRUCK - Smithton Man's Sudden Death.
While riding on a pump truck at the Six-mile on the Marrawah tramway yesterday morning, Frederick Boote (42) of Smithton, collapsed and died soon afterwards. With Messrs. R. Dunn and A. Simpson Mr. Boote was propelling the truck and complained of not feeling well. He then sat down at the rear of the truck. After travelling in that position for a short distance he fell from the truck on to the line. He died shortly after his companions were able to stop the truck and go back to him. A post mortem examination revealed that death was due to heart failure.
The late Mr. Boote was the oldest son of Mrs. Boote. Smithton, and the late Mr. William Boote. He was a staunch adherent of the Brethren Church and was held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact.
The funeral will leave the residence of his sister. Mrs. F. M. Grundy. Smith St., Smithton, at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow.

The Accident at Duck River – Nibbs in a serious condition
Launceston, Monday. A young man named Frank Nibbs from Duck River, was admitted to the Launceston General Hospital yesterday suffering from laceration of the inner portion of the left foot caused by a slip of an axe while Nibbs was chopping a log. Enquiries at the institution today elicited the fact that blood poisoning had set in and the case is considered serious.

While Mr Frank Nibbs, benchman at Moles Mill was cutting a piece of timber, it slipped and he cut his left hand through the thumb ad across the back of his hand. Mr Moles took him to the Wynyard Hospital where the wound was attended to, several stitches being inserted.

Military: He enlisted with the AIF at Claremont, Tas. on 11 Jan 1916, Service No. 5156 and embarked from Melbourne on board the RMS Orontes in 23 March 1916. His war record which is available online with National Archives Australia notes that the 2nd and 3rd fingers on his right hand were missing. (An earlier sawmill accident). He was severely wounded in action in France in Sept 1916 (Shoulder, right foot, left knee) and transferred to hospital in Kent, England. He re-joined his Batt. in France 16 Sept. 1917. He was hospitalised again in Sept 1918 whilst on leave in London.

Smithton – from our Correspondent
A regrettable accident occurred last week to Mr Thomas Nibbs one of the most expert sawmill benchmen in this district. He had the misfortune to have the first finger of his right hand taken clean off by a circular saw at Grey Bros. mill. The cut took a slanting direction and the second and third fingers were amputated at the second and third joints respectively. It is a trite saying amongst sawmill benchmen that “their turn must come some day “and in such philosophical mood Mr Nibbs has taken his misadventure.

On May 3rd, the Methodist Church Smithton was the scene of a pretty wedding when June Mary, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs T H Nibbs, Goldie Street, Smithton and Reginald Smith, Lileah were united in matrimony. The bride was given away by her grandfather Mr J Bentley snr. Wore a frock of white moiré taffeta with heart shaped neckline, yoke of embroidered net and short ruched sleeves. The skirt hung full, with a long train from the long waisted bodice. White, elbow-length mittens were worn and the veil of white embroidered faille was held in place by a halo of orange blossoms.
The bride wore the bridegrooms gift, a string of pearls, and carried a bouquet of lilies, chrysanthemums and fern, adorned with white satin streamers. She was attended by Miss Aileen Blake, who wore a pink frock of English crepe with a low neckline and finished with a soft frilling of georgette. The skirt fell in a soft fold from the long bodice. Her pink shoulder length veil was held in place by a halo of pink roses and cosmos. Pink elbow-length mittens were worn, and she carried a bouquet of lilies and chrysanthemums. She wore a gold cross and chain, the gift of the bridegroom. Little Audrey Bentley, cousin of the bride, was cushion bearer, and wore a white satin frock with Peter Pan collar. Little pink bows, a butterfly bow at the waist and a head band of shirred net, with small rose beads, completed the costume. She wore the groom’s gift of a gold chain bangle.
The bridegroom was attended by his brother-in-law, Mr Les. Marthick as best man. The bride knelt on a white shirred satin cushion lent by Mrs P Burgess. While the register was being signed, Mr Murfet played “Bells across the meadow.”
As the bride left the church a white satin horse shoe was placed on her arm by her niece Marie Bentley. At a reception held later at their home, the bride’s parents entertained about 30 guests. Mrs Nibbs wore a brown suit, with a dusty pink blouse, pink shoulder spray and brown accessories. Mrs Smith, mother of the bridegroom, chose a floral dress with black coat, hat and accessories.
The tables were decorated with Easter daisies and pink cosmos. The three-tier wedding cake was made by the bridegroom’s sister, and decorated by Mrs B Ikin, Tier Hill. Mr Reg Weedon was toast master.

Truck Driver Killed- A truck driver employed by the Circular Head Council was fatally injured late yesterday afternoon when a truck he was driving overran an embankment in a quarry at Marrawah and turned over several times. He was. William Lonnie Gale, a married man, who lived with his wife and seven children at Marrawah. Deceased was carting road metal, and late in the afternoon returned to the quarry for another load. He was accompanied in the driving seat by John Gregory Saward, road overseer of the Circular Head Council. Saward jumped clear and escaped injury, but Gale was killed instantly.

A large and representative gathering attended the funeral of Mr William Lonnie Gale of Marrawah. The interment took place at the Marrawah cemetery after a short service at the home of deceased’s parents. It was conducted by M C Ling, who also officiated at the graveside.
Mr Gale was born in the Marrawah district 41 years ago, and apart from a period of tin mining at Mt Balfour, spent all his life there. He was a keen sportsman, being a member of Marrawah Football Club and Green Point Cricket Club. He was the only son of Mr and Mrs J Gale and Married Miss Lennice Emmerton, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Emmerton, of Stanley. He is survived by his widow and seven children – Lance, Lyell, Margaret, Tommy, John, David, and Bernard.
Chief mourners were the widow and children, mother and father and sisters (Mesdames E. Abblitt and C. C. Arnold) Carriers were Messrs E Bayley (cousin) P Rowe, E Abblitt, C C Arnold, F Chatwin and D Emmerton (brothers in law).
Among the wreaths were those from the CWA, Marrawah Football Club, Hardwoods Pty Ltd, Marrawah Parents and Friends Association, Marrawah State School, Marrawah Cheese Factory, Marrawah Cricket Club, Irishtown Football Club, and the staff of Marrawah Cheese Factory.

While members of the Christian Brethren were renovating the Gospel Hall at Marrawah, a scaffolding on which they were standing collapsed and Messrs J W Gale, A E Saward, C Arnold and E Arnold were thrown 10 ft. to the ground. C Arnold had an arm broken and one hand was badly cut. E Arnold suffered injuries to the back and Gale was bruised and suffered from shock.

“Ray View Farm” Marrawah was the scene of a quiet but pretty wedding on June 14 when Elizabeth Mary, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J Gale, Marrawah was married to Clarence Charles, second son of Mr and Mrs W Arnold, Marrawah. Mr Menzies, Baptist Minister, Smithton, officiated.
The bride who was given away by her father looked very becoming in her bridal frock of pale blue. She carried a posy of carnations and mignonette, tied with pale blue ribbon. Miss Rachel Arnold, sister of the bridegroom, attended as bridesmaid, Mr E Arnold as best man.
After the ceremony near relatives of both families were entertained by the bride’s parents to afternoon tea arranged by the bride’s sisters. Mesdames Joyce, Bayley and Abblitt. The wedding cake was made by Mrs E Abblitt.
After the usual toasts, many congratulatory telegrams were read. Later the happy couple left amidst a shower of confetti by car for the honeymoon at Cormiston and Hobart.

Mrs Flora Matilda Caroline Powe who died at the Spencer Hospital, Wynyard after a long illness was the wife of the late Arthur William Powe, of Ulverstone, who pre-deceased her 12 years ago. Since then Mrs Powe lived with her daughter Mrs. Len Williams of Preolenna.
Mrs Powe was the daughter of the late John and Caroline Nibbs of Smithton. She was born at Smithton and spent her childhood days there. After her marriage, she lived on the North-West Coast.
She leaves a family of three daughters, Lily (Mrs Applebee of Brooklyn) Flora (Mrs Williams of Preolenna) Caroline (Mrs Eastley of Burnie) and one son Arthur (Spalford).
Chief mourners were her daughters and son, three sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother (Mr Thomas Nibbs, Smithton), sister (Mrs W Innis, Smithton) brothers-in-law W Innis, Smithton and Jack Gale, Marrawah) and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral took place in the Wynyard Public Cemetery after a service in the Gospel Hall. Both the services at the church and graveside were conducted by Mr. Ira Morse, of Preollenna. Carriers were three sons-in-law, Messrs Len Williams, Doug Applebee, Ken Eastley and Doug Byard. Pallbearers were Mr Jack Gale, Ron Bayley, Phil Williams and Alf Williams. A pretty wedding took place in the Church of England, Wilmot on January 2 when Bertha Alice, 4th daughter of Mr and Mrs W Shaw, of Wilmot became the wife of Arthur John Powe in Ulverstone. The ceremony was performed by Rev Johnson of Sheffield. The bride was attended by her sister Miss Kyra C Shaw. The best man was Mr Victor Shaw, brother of the bride. Little Rita Shaw niece of the bride was cushion bearer. The future home of the Mr and Mrs A J Powe will be at Wilmot.

2. Edward 19 September 1869 Forrabury, Tas. [Sassafras] This name appears in several Ancestry trees, but his birth is not validated. An Edward Howard died of TB in Launceston Hospital,19 Jan. 1895. He would have been around the right age, but this this also needs to be validated by the death certificate. Nothing else found.

A Henry Howard age 27 died in Launceston 4 Sept. 1894 of TB. This also needs to be validated. (LINC name index no. 1171105)
He had an Uncle Henry Howard and some trees also seem to have the relationships of these two confused.

Notes:
I think that Sarah Ann was generally known as Gertude but used both names. It seems she was also raised by the Rawsons after her mother died. There is probably a story here which we will never know.
Ancestry Family trees often include both names. Some Ancestry family trees have different birth dates but the same death date and place in N.Z. for both
I cannot find birth records for Sarah or Gertrude.
Elizabeth’s obituary stated that there were eight children, but if we count Gertrude and Sarah separately, it makes nine children.
There are child births registered in both Sarah and Gertrude’s names, some with the father not named and some with Robert Henry Hedge named on the birth registration.
Sarah Ann – Tas. Names index show she had two children. One father not named, and another child with Robert Henry Hedge.

He was born to Sarah Ann Agnes Howard at Hope Cottage Launceston, a home for single mothers. His father is not named. (LINC name Index 939215) There is no record of him having lived with ‘Gertrude’ and Robert Hedge. He may have been adopted as there is a WW1 enlistment for an Arthur Howard/Cootes in Victoria which names his next-of-kin as wife Amy. Arthur Vernon Howard was married to Amy Maud Hutton. A private letter received from Melbourne on Saturday reported the serious illness of Mrs. Angus Lamont, who for fully 40 years was a resident in the Mersey district. She was on a visit to her daughter in Melbourne and went to a dentist to have some teeth extracted, which operation was followed by extensive bleeding. The unfortunate lady was in the Melbourne Hospital for two hours before it was stopped, and when brought home the bleeding recommenced, and it was an hour before the doctor stopped the terrible drain on her system, and she was in & weak condition when the letter was written. She had been visited by the Revs G. J. Mackay and W. E. Secomb, the former Baptist and Methodist ministers of Devonport. Mr. Secomb, by the way, is suffering from an attack of acute influenza, an ailment very prevalent in the Victorian capital.

Mrs. W. J. Turner, of Scottsdale, is visiting her sister, Mrs. T. Ray, of Devonport East. Mrs. Turner's health has not been at all satisfactory for the last few months, and her family and friends hope that the trip will improve her health. Mrs. Turner (better known as Mrs. Lamont) has seen- many old friends during the short time she has been in Devonport, her former home. The severe climate or the conditions of Scottsdale have never suited Mrs. Turner. She has never been well since she settled there. It is hoped a month's change will have the desired effect.

There passed away at Lilydale on Monday one of the oldest pioneers of the North-West Coast, in the person of Mrs. William Turner. The deceased lady was in her 80th year, and had been suffering for about nine months. Mrs. Turner was a daughter of Mr. William Nibbs, one of the earliest settlers on the North-West Coast, and was first married to the late Mr. Angus Lamont of Castra. The major part of her life was spent at Devonport, and 20 years ago, on the death of her first husband, Mrs. Lamont and her son removed to Lefroy. Upon her second marriage to Mr. W Turner they resided in Scottsdale for about twelve years, lately removing to Lilydale. Mrs. Turner was a devoted member of the Methodist Church. Her remains were laid to rest in the Lilydale Cemetery. The Rev. Fletcher officiated at the service in the home and also at the grave. The chief mourners were her husband Mr. Turner, Mr. Lamont (son), Mrs. J Will (daughter), Mesdames Thos. Ray, J Foley (sisters), Mr. J Nibbs (brother), Mrs. G Bullock (granddaughter), Mrs. F Rooke, Mrs. C Lamont and Mr. B W Turner. The deceased lady had twelve children by her first marriage, and all but two predeceased her. Mrs. J Will of Launceston, and Mr. C Lamont of Lefroy. She also leaves twenty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

One of the earliest pioneers of the Castra Road district passed away on Monday last when the death occurred of Mrs. W Turner of Lilydale. She had lived in several parts of Tasmania and consequently had a wide and numerous circle of friends. The late Mrs. Turner was born at Westbury 77 years ago and was the eldest daughter of the late William Nibbs, a local preacher in the Methodist Church at Westbury. In her girlhood her parents moved to Devonport, where she was married to the late Mr. Angus Lamont, who died some 20 years ago. From Devonport the couple went to Castra Road which was then in the nature of a dense forest. At this time there were only six other families in the district and the couple saw the locality gradually open up into a prosperous farming district as the years advanced. It was in the Lamont home that the Methodist minister used to conduct divine service in the district, the Lamont’s having been devout adherents to that faith all their lives. Many interesting stories she related in later years of the hardships and even adventures connected with pioneering in the early days. After having lived in Castra for several years she returned to Devonport and subsequently to Lefroy, where she is widely remembered today. At Lefroy she was married to Mr. Turner and subsequently lived at Scottsdale, and finally at Lilydale. She leaves her family of the first Marriage, Mrs. J H Will, of Cleveland Road, Launceston and Mr. C L Lamont of Lefroy. She is survived also by Mr. Turner and his grown-up family, Captain Frank Turner in the Salvation Army in Queensland, and Benjamin (Lilydale), Norman (Scottsdale), and Edgar (Wynyard), Mrs. Reeves and Miss Vera Turner (both of Lilydale). The funeral took place at Lilydale on Wednesday, Rev. J S Fletcher of Lilydale conducting the service. There was a large and representative cortege, and many beautiful floral tributes showed how deeply Mrs. Turner’s death was lamented.

Information reached Devonport on Monday of the passing away at Lilydale that morning of Mrs. W Turner in her 80th year. The major part of her long life had been spent in the Mersey District; she was the daughter of the late Mr. W Nibbs, one of the earliest residents of the district. Her first husband was the late Mr. Angus Lamont; she had twelve children all but two have predeceased her. The two survivors are Mrs. Joseph Will, of Launceston (whose late husband was associated with the Hercules Mine), and Mr. Claude Lamont of Lefroy. Mrs. Lamont was a sister to Mesdames T Ray and John Foley of East Devonport, and Messrs. J L and T H Nibbs. The deceased lady had been ailing for some time. Mrs. Ray found her conscious when she arrived at Lilydale on Friday night, the sufferer passing peacefully away on Monday morning. Mrs. Lamont was an earnest member of the Methodist Church, and her memory will be held in remembrance by a large circle of friends. Her remains were laid to rest at Lilydale.

They first lived in the Port Sorell district and later took up land at Castra Road, Sprent, near Ulverstone. There is a no. of family graves in the Sprent Methodist Cemetery on Castra Road.

OBITUARY. MR. ANGUS LAMONT - Examiner, Launceston 9 January 1902
. We regret to have to record the death of a respected resident of the N.W. Coast in the person of Mr. Angus Lamont, which took place at his residence, Little Fenton-street, West Devonport, at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mr. Lamont, who was 66 years of age, arrived in Tasmania in 1861 in the Broomielaw, in company with Mr. and Mrs. McPherson, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, his youngest sister (Miss C. Lamont), and a number of others, from Ayrshire, Scotland. After travelling throughout Tasmania, Mr. Lamont finally settled in the Castra district, having taken up a selection of land adjoining those of his three brothers-in-law, Messrs. McPherson, Stewart, and Dolbell. For some 14 years he carried on farming and contracting in that district, afterwards removing to Latrobe, where for some years he continued road contracting. Mr. Lamont visited most of the mining centres in Tasmania, and in some of the other states. With his family he has resided at Devonport for some years. Whilst with his sister, Mrs. McPherson, of Sprent, he took suddenly and seriously ill, and medical aid being obtained he was advised to go to Launceston, which he did, staying with his daughter, Mrs. Will, where he was treated by Drs. Webster and Cotterell for some internal complaint. The doctors holding out no hope of his recovery, Mrs. Lamont took him home, where Dr. Smith, of Devonport, attended him. Mr. Lamont expressed a wish to have his family with him on Christmas Day, and his wish was gratified. His five [surviving] children, ten grandchildren, and one son-in-law, together with his daughter-in-law, were present, the only members absent being Mr. George Bullock, of Epping, and Mr. Thos. Plummer, of Strahan. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. Lamont and the family in their bereavement. The funeral takes place this afternoon at three o'clock.

Another old resident has joined the great majority — Mr. Angus Lamont, who passed peacefully away at West Devonport on Tuesday night. He was well known in the surrounding district, having lived in various portions over 80 years, and latterly had been working at Castra and Rosebery, and it is possible that the privations he endured in the latter district developed and aggravated the malady which finally overcame his hardy Scotch frame. He went to Launceston some time since, where at the house of his daughter, Mrs. J. Wills, he was attended by no less than six doctors, who pronounced his case hopeless, and shortly before Christmas he returned to his home to die; the end coming as above stated. He leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters, for whom the utmost sympathy is felt; one son and daughter having previously succumbed to consumption, and another was accidentally drowned in the Mersey. The funeral will take place to-day at 8.30, the. Place of interment being the general cemetery, East Devonport.

It is with regret that we announce the death of Mr. Angus Lamont, an old and much respected resident of Devonport. Mr. Lamont who was 66 years of age, died at his residence on Tuesday evening, after an illness of over three months, the cause of death being an internal complaint. The deceased gentleman was born in Ayrshire, Scotland and came to Tasmania 42 years ago in the ship Broomielaw, bringing with him his three sisters and their husbands. They all settled at Castra, where Mr. Lamont carried on farming and contracting for 14 years. On leaving Castra he went to Latrobe, where he did a large amount of road contracting for the Government. He married Miss Nibbs, daughter of a well-known identity Mr. William Nibbs at what was then called Torquay, and was the father of 12 children, five of whom survive him. They are Mrs. Bunton and Mrs. Will of Launceston, Mrs. Bullock of Epping Forest, Mr. Angus Lamont of the s.s. Kamona, and Mr. Claude Lamont. The deceased gentleman was widely known throughout Tasmania and the new of his death will be received with genuine regret. Dr. Smith attended the sufferer at Devonport, while medical aid was also obtained at Launceston and Ulverstone. The funeral leaves his residence for East Devonport this afternoon at 3 o’clock.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Dolbell took place on Sunday afternoon the Methodist Cemetery, Castra Road. There was a very large attendance, the burial service being read by the Rev. H Clarke, the hymn “A Day’s March Nearer Home,” was sung, the request that this be done having been made by deceased before her death. The chief mourners were Messrs. Angus McPherson; Angus, Alexander and Simon Stewart (nephews) and Elvyn Dolbel (grandson). The pall bearers were Messrs. G Bingham, J McDonald, T W Wright and Alex. McLaren. A number of beautiful wreaths were placed on the coffin. The deceased lady was born in Portsea, Isle of Skye, in the year 1840, and arrived in Tasmania in 1857 with her brother, Mr. Angus Lamont, and two sisters, the late Mrs. D Stewart and Mrs. Duncan McPherson, mother of Mr. Angus McPherson (member of the Leven Harbor Trust). She remained at Launceston and Torquay for some time until 1865, when having married the late Mr. Henry Philip Dolbell, they removed to Sprent, and took up the homestead. At the time, they entered upon the life of pioneers there was practically no road – only a track made by paling carts. Here the late Mrs. Dolbell had to confront all the difficulties which beset those who first opened the now fertile lands of Leven, and in this struggle, she earned the esteem and appreciation of all who knew her. They had seven daughters and three sons, of whom only one daughter survives.

Mr. W J Turner who died in Launceston on Friday at the age of 78 was buried at Lilydale on Saturday. The late Mr Turner was at one time prominently connected with the Methodist Church at Lilydale and was also YP Sgt-Major in the Salvation Army.
In earlier years he was a nurseryman in the Hadspen district and in other places a noted gardener. At the time of his death he was Envoy in the Salvation Army at Sth. Launceston. Prior to this he was connected with the Army at Scottsdale and Derby. He was of quiet disposition.
A service was conducted in the Salvation Army Hall at Sth. Launceston by Adjutant Jewell, Corps Officer.
When the cortege reached Lilydale, it was preceded to the Lilydale Cemetery by the South Launceston Salvation Army Band . The service at the graveside was conducted by Adjutant Jewell, assisted by Adjutant Millward of Lilydale. Adjutant Jewell paid high tribute to the life of service lived by Envoy Turner.
Among those present at the funeral were the four sons, Messrs. Ben (Derby,) Norman (Branxholme), Walter (Devonport) and Edgar (Launceston), Mr Ben Turner (brother) and Mr. A L Reeve (son-in-law).

THE LAST RITES
The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Bunton, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Angus Lamont, of Devonport, took place in the East Devonport general cemetery yesterday. The deceased died in Launceston, and the remains were brought down by the morning train, and immediately afterwards the hearse proceeded to the place of interment. The immediate mourners were the aged mother and stepfather (Mr. and Mrs. W. Turner, of Scottsdale) brother (Mr. Claude Lamont), sister (Mrs. Bullock), and Messrs. J. L. and T. H. Nibbs and T. Ray (uncles), with other relations. The carriers were the four cousins of deceased, Messrs. G. and T. Howard, Angus and Claude Stewart, whilst several old residents were also present to show their respect, which was further exemplified by numerous floral tributes of sympathy.

The death of Mrs Annie T Will occurred at her son-in-law’s home, 26 Malabar Street, Launceston on Tuesday night after a severe illness.
Mrs Will was the widow of the late Joseph Will, well known in mining circles some years ago. 5. William Francis Lamont 1872-1895

William died by accidental drowning after being swept from a capsized boat in the Mersey River, age 23. His body was not recovered. Death and inquest records are available online (LINC) Tasmanian Archives Portal.

DROWNING FATALITY AT EAST DEVONPORT - SEARCH FOR THE BODY.
On Thursday evening the community were Shocked to hear that a young man named William Lamont, the oldest son of Mr Angus Lamont, a very old resident of the district, had been drowned, and enquiry proved that the report was, unfortunately, only too true. It appears that the young man, who was 23 years of age, was proceeding with his cousin, George Howard, and a seaman and the cook of the ketch Swift, in the boat of that vessel, across the river, starting from the beach just above the Thomas Street jetty, where the Swift was lying. The cook was sculling the boat, and had hardly left the bank, when the tremendous current carried the boat, over which the sculler seemed to have no power, right under the stern of the ketch, where the boat was capsized in the vortex, and was dashed against the vessel with such force as to be completely smashed. Three of the occupants just escaped with their lives by clinging to the ropes by which the Swift was moored, but poor Lamont was sucked under the ship. It was just getting dark, and he was not seen again, but his hat was recovered floating upon the surface of the water, and pieces of the boat were found on the beach where also on Friday morning his mackintosh was stranded. The deceased was a hard-working, industrious young man, and had been a great help in the support of his family, who are thus so suddenly plunged into the depth of sorrow, and to whom the sympathy of the whole township has gone out in this sad hour of bereavement. On Thursday night a boat was manned, and the little bay leading up to the baths was dragged without result, and on Friday parties were scouring the beach in hopes of recovering his body; but, with the strong current which was running, and the position where the deceased was last seen, it is more likely that he was carried right out to sea. The boat of the Swift, or, rather, one half of it, as it was cut right across, has been picked up. A careful search of the beaches was being made on Friday out to Pardoe Point, and a messenger had also gone on to Port Sorrell.

The death of a promising young man has to be recorded in the person of Mr. John T Lamont, son of Mr Angus Lamont of East Devonport who has succumbed to consumption, brought on by a cold that he unfortunately neglected. This happened last year while he was engaged at Mount Reid on a contract about which time a great sorrow befell the same family in the death by drowning of Mr William F Lamont. Mr John Lamont was a general favourite, being most gentlemanly in his demeanour. Just budding into manhood, he was an enthusiastic sportsman, a good cricketer, manly footballer, capital pigeon shot – above all a thoroughly good son, having been the chief support of his parents for many a year. Deceased was greatly esteemed by all who know him, and his cheerful face will long be missed on the NW coast. The funeral leaves his parents’ home this afternoon.

Funeral: The funeral of the late Mr J T Lamont took place on the 17th inst. At East Devonport, when the remains were followed by a large number of relatives and friends. The coffin which was borne by four of the deceased’s friends was covered with tasteful wreathes and crosses, and other tokens of the remembrance, showing in what high esteem he was held. The service was conducted by the Rev. Secomb in a very impressive manner, and Miss Aikin presided at the organ. The chief mourners were the father of the deceased, his two surviving brothers, Messrs. Angus and C H Lamont, his three sisters, Mrs Bunton, Mrs J Will (of Invermay) and Miss Lamont [Christina Katherine McPherson], and Mr J Will (brother-in-law). Much sympathy is expressed for the parents and friends.

WEDDING BELLS – LAMONT – PINKARD
A quiet wedding was celebrated by Rev G N Wheaton at the Deloraine Methodist Church on Monday night, the contracting parties being Arthur John only son of Mrs and the late Mr Angus Lamont, and Miss Elsie Madge third daughter of Mr and Mrs Pinkard, Deloraine. The church had been decked out in the colours of the 10th Battalion AIF in which the bridegroom served. The bride and bridegroom during the ceremony stood under a large wedding bell, on either side of which were their initials.
The bride was given away by her father and wore a beautiful travelling dress of blue celanese with a brown felt hat. The ‘Bridal March’ was played by Miss M Wheaton as the bride entered the church, and the congregation sang ’The Voice that brushed o’er Eden.’ While the register was being signed ‘How lovely a Zion’ was rendered. Mendelssohn’s Wedding March being played as the party left the church.
A number of friends were entertained at the breakfast at the home of the bride’s parents. The dining-room decorated with the colours of the 40th Battalion, and pride of place was given to a massive 3-tier wedding cake. The usual toasts and felicitous speeches were honoured.
The bride’s gift to the bridegroom was a gold watch and chain; the bridegrooms gift to the bride being a gold wristlet watch. The happy pair left later on a honeymoon tour on the North West.
