Sarah Nibbs 1850-1932


Sarah Jane Nibbs was the third daughter of William Nibbs and Mary Ann Timoney.

Birth:   15 September, 1850 at Westbury, Tasmania

Death: 7 June 1932 at Hobart, Tasmania both of East Devonport.

Burial: Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Tasmania

Executors: Francis Arthur Foley and Leonard John Foley.  [sons]

Beneficiaries: Clement Henry Foley – Land and house John Street, East Devonport; Leonard John Foley - land fronting Caroline Street, East Devonport; Samuel S K Foley – land fronting Mary Street, East Devonport; Eileen Shepherd (dgt) – whole of my household furniture and goods;
Ronald Lindus Foley [Shepherd](grandson) – all monies I possess at my demise.

Spouse 1:        At age 15 Sarah had an in illegitimate son to Colonel Benjamin Henry Rooke. 

Colonel Benjamin Henry Rooke was born in the United Kingdom in 1809 and died February 10, 1884 at Ulverstone. He is buried East Devonport Anglican (St Paul).  After retirement from the British Army, Rooke came to Tasmania with his Spanish wife and son Henry and stayed with his brother Mr. Adolphus Frederick Rooke of Westbury.
He became Police Clerk and Deputy Registrar at the Court of Requests at Torquay [Port Sorrell District] in 1860.  Rooke Street, West Devonport is named after him. His first wife died in 1865 and his son Henry went on to become a member of the Legislative Council.

Col. Rooke married Caroline Agnes Stevens in 1868 and they had 5 children, one of whom, (Frederick Kinder Rooke), married Sarah’s daughter Catherine Dufton Foley.

                                Torquay Police Court Wed March 23 before Henry Douglas, Esq., S.M.

                                Robert James Brown aged 16 and William Nibbs, alias Rooke, aged 15 were charged

                                with unlawfully and maliciously setting fire to a stack of wheat, a stack of oats, and a                        stack of hay, the property of S H Thomas of Northdown. 

Apparently they were smoking a bit of dock for a pipe and the thistle blew onto the stack which may have caused the fire. They were committed to trial and released on bail. (Full story online - Trove digital newspapers).
