Thomas Henry Nibbs 1859-1947

Thomas Henry was the second youngest son of William Nibbs and Mary Ann Timoney.

Born: 16 August 1859 at Port Sorrell, Tas.

Died 31 August 1947 at Enfield, N.S.W.

Burial: Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, NSW. Section C, Row 23, Denomination -Independent

Spouse 1:
Thomas married Emma Olive on 10 June 1890 at the Wesleyan Church, Devonport East [Port Frederick] by Rev. David Stewart Lindsay. Witnesses were Joseph Harrison and Fanny Olive.

Emma was the daughter of John Olive 1836-1875 and Nancy Ogden 1836-  of Prestwich, Lancashire, England.

Emma left London for Hobart, Tas. on the emigration ship S.S. Tamar on 30 December 1886.   She was followed by her sister Fanny who left London on the Ionic, 28 Dec 1889 and arrived in Hobart 6 Feb 1890. Her eldest sister Ellen Ann along with her husband Joseph Harrison had arrived in Hobart earlier, on the ship Cape Clear, 26 October 1883.

Emma died on 25 October, 1903 and is buried at East Devonport Cemetery.

Devonport
A sad death occurred at East Devonport yesterday, when Mrs Thomas Nibbs passed away after a lingering illness at the early age of 35 years, leaving her husband with seven helpless children, the eldest being only ten years old. Mr Nibbs brother, William Nibbs, also lost his wife during the week, the death occurring in the Launceston Hospital

Death: NIBBS. On Sunday, October 25 at her residence, East Devonort, Emma, the beloved wife of Thomas Nibbs, aged 35 years.

Funeral Notice: The funeral of the late Mrs Thomas Nibbs will leave her residence, East Devonport, at 4.30 pm Today Tuesday 27 October, for the General Cemetery. Friends invited.

Thomas married Ada Louisa Clark (nee Mansfield) 1859-1937 on 25 August 1910.
They did not have any children, but she did have children, (Frank, Alice and Emma), from a previous marriage. (George Clark)

A family story is - Thomas Nibbs took over the lease at Pardoe (100 acres) in 1855. It is believed that Thomas stayed here with his father after his mother (Mary Ann) died.

In 1915, advertisements for Tenders for the lease of Pardoe Estate were advertised in the Tasmanian papers. It included one lot of 265 acres known locally as Nibbs block.

   The death took place yesterday of Ernest Nibbs, eldest son of Mr. Thomas Nibbs of East Devonport. The deceased, who was only 22 years of age, has suffered for a lengthy period from lung troubles and his end was not unexpected.    Believe she was a nurse/matron, working in rural hospitals in NSW (Orange, Deniliquin, Tumut, Cowra, Cooma).

   Note: There is more than one Thomas Nibbs – Need to check this information with Nibbs family in Tasmania, as I believe they are descended from a Thomas. Is this line correct?

   One address corresponds with that of his sister – Edna Mary.

   A newspaper article in April 1934, refers to a discrepancy in his application for sustenance. The evidence refers to the wages and meal allowance paid to his wife.
